Last Sunday, March 15th I had the privilege of attending the Family Winemakers of California’s first Southern California Tasting at Fairplex, Pomona. Almost 100 small, family-owned wineries, from across California. I love that the focus of this event was on small, Southern California family owned wineries. Below are reviews of my favorites out of all of the wineries which I had tasted for this event.
Carlisle Winery & Vineyards poured some interesting wines:
2013 Carlisle Grüner Veltliner Steiner Vineyard
Light refreshing taste but had a slight tannin bitterness at the end.
2013 Russian River Valley “Montafi Ranch” Zinfandel
Nice blend with blackberry notes & slight touch of tannin in this bottle. This bottle will definitely taste better in a couple of years.
Clos Pepe Estate’s amazing line up of wines, they specialize in small production of Pinot Noirs & Chardonnays.
2012 CHARDONNAY, HOMAGE TO CHABLIS (rated 93 points)
Light citrus notes with a smooth finish.
2012 Clos Pepe Estate Pinot Noir, Santa Rita Hills (rated 92 points)
Medium bodied pinot with nice berry notes and a smooth finish.
AXIS MUNDI 2012 GRENACHE/SYRAH, WINDMILL VINEYARDS (rated 90 points)
(67% Grenache, 33% Syrah from Ballard Canyon, Santa Ynez Valley)
Light , juicy & easy to drink this wine is, with a good finish.
Navarro Vineyards was one my top favorite wineries from this event. Below are my top favorite wines that I tasted that day.
2013 Navarro Vineyards Gewürztraminer Grape Juice
This was extremely smooth, fruity with floral notes which would be even better chilled. This reminded me of many of the sweet ice wines I have tried before.
2012 Navarro Vineyards Chardonnay, Mendocino
This wine had nice light citrus- lemony notes with a good smooth finish. This would pair great with seafood or any light dishes.
Tablas Creek poured some really great wines, among them, these were my top favorites.
2012 Tablas Creek Vineyard Mourvèdre
Medium bodied, great smooth finish very little tannin. Great plum and currant notes, this would go great with red/ dark meats or chocolates.
2012 Tablas Creek Vineyard Vermentino
Light grassy & lemony crisp notes, making this a great wine to drink on a hot summer day.
2014 Tablas Creek Vineyard Patelin de Tablas Rosé
Clean, fresh citrus notes with a slight acidic finish. This wine would be great to enjoy on a hot day.
2012 Round Pond Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
Green vegetable notes on this medium bodied cab but had a nice smooth finish.
2014 Round Pond RUTHERFORD SAUVIGNON BLANC
Crisp citrus & grassy notes with a slight acidic finish. Great to enjoy on warm day.
2010 Barlow Unfiltered Merlot
Awards: San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, 2014: Gold
Intense fruity flavors great smooth finish & good balance of tannin.
2010 Barlow Vineyards Barrouge
Medium bodied with dark cherry & berried tones & good finish.
2013 Barlow Sauvignon Blanc
Crisp with many layers of citrus fruits and a slight mineral finish to this good balanced wine.
2012 Pride Merlot Napa Spring Mountain
Medium bodied with dark/complex and cab-like taste, however fruitier and livelier than a typical napa cab.
2012 Rock Wall ‘Jack’s Dry Creek’ Petite Sirah, Sonoma County
Wine Spectrum Rated 93+
Dark medium bodied petite sirah with blackberry smells and slight peppery finish.

Nice floral nose, slightly mineral smooth finish.
2013 Page Mill Winery GPS
Light, crisp with medium tannin, good smooth finish.
